My Journey as a Virtual Assistant

Hi, I’m PJ. I’ve been working as a virtual assistant for several years, and the journey has been worth every moment. I didn’t start as an expert.

I began as an ESL teacher and internet researcher, slowly learning new skills and exploring opportunities in the virtual assistant industry.

Over time, I became what many people call a jane-of-all-trades VA. Along the way, one tool helped me solve countless problems and learn new things: Google.

Whenever I faced technical questions or unfamiliar tasks, I researched, practiced, and kept learning.

Today, my skill set includes:

  • Web design and development

  • Graphic design

  • Bookkeeping

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

  • SEM (Search Engine Marketing)

  • Social media management

  • Customer support

It might look like a lot, but the truth is many of these skills are built from simple fundamentals.

And that’s exactly what this course focuses on.

What Is a Virtual Assistant?

A Virtual Assistant (VA) is someone who helps businesses remotely by completing online tasks.

Instead of hiring employees locally, many companies now hire skilled remote workers who can support their operations from anywhere in the world.

Virtual assistants help businesses with tasks such as:

  • Administrative work

  • Social media management

  • customer support

  • website updates

  • graphic design

  • SEO and digital marketing

  • bookkeeping and data management

Every virtual assistant eventually develops their own area of specialization.

But before choosing a specialty, it’s important to understand how the industry works.

I often receive messages like:

“How can I apply for that job?”
“What VA company do you work with?”
“Can you recommend me to your VA company?”

These questions are very common.

But the truth is, applying for a VA job without understanding the role is not the best approach.

Before you apply for jobs, you need to understand:

  • what a virtual assistant actually does

  • what skills are required

  • how remote work operates

  • how clients evaluate freelancers

This is why training and preparation are important.

Soft Skills vs Hard Skills

When preparing to become a virtual assistant, there are two types of skills you need to develop.

Soft Skills

These are natural abilities that help you work well with clients and teams.

Examples include:

  • communication

  • leadership

  • adaptability

  • teamwork

  • time management

  • problem-solving

Hard Skills

Hard skills are the services you offer as a virtual assistant.

These are skills you learn through practice, training, or experience.

Examples include:

  • social media management

  • WordPress support

  • email marketing

  • graphic design

  • SEO

  • bookkeeping

  • customer support

Every successful VA builds a combination of both soft skills and hard skills.

Your Most Important VA Tool

Before learning advanced skills, you need to understand your most important tool.

Your computer or laptop.

As a virtual assistant, learning how to properly manage your computer, files, internet tools, and productivity apps is essential.

That’s why the course includes lessons on computer basics, file management, and productivity tools.

Communication Is Your Superpower

In remote work, communication can make or break your success.

A large part of a virtual assistant’s job involves written communication through emails, messages, and collaboration tools.

Inside the course, you’ll learn how to:

  • manage professional emails

  • communicate clearly with clients

  • use tools like Slack, Skype, and WhatsApp

  • organize conversations and tasks

You’ll also learn the difference between hearing and active listening, which is one of the most important skills when working with clients.
