How do mixed insects taste like? A Night in Bangkok with a Crunchy Surprise

Turning Ordinary Days Into Extraordinary Memories.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to snack on crunchy grasshoppers, juicy silkworms, and other crawling little things, welcome to our weirdest, wildest family dinner yet 🤯

This was our first night in Bangkok after a long day of traveling from Davao to Singapore and finally to Thailand. And yes, we really did it, we tried mixed insects at a Bangkok night market. (Grabe, sino ba’ng nag-challenge sa amin nito?? 😅)

Early Morning Chaos: Davao to Changi

Our day started at 5:00 AM, went to the airport, and dang, a power outage happened (brownout, men) . We haven’t checked in yet, and our flight is at 7:25 AM. We need to pay for our travel tax and terminal fee. The ATMs are not working because of a power outage. We just prayed and rattled at the same time. At 6:17, we are boarding gate. Yey!

The vibe? Sleepy, chaotic, and full of toddler questions from Nacha, like:

“Where are we going?”
“To the airplane!”
“Where is the airplane going?”
“I don’t know…”

From there, our little trio – me, Noah, and Nacha made our way to Changi Airport in Singapore. Layover means Popeye’s chicken first. Nacha was convinced we were heading to Disneyland Shanghai that day. (Sana all!) But our real destination was Thailand first.

Hello, Bangkok!

By 5:03 PM, we arrived at The Cottage Suvarnabhumi, a cozy hotel near the airport, just perfect for a one-night stopover. The room was clean, comfy.

We took a short rest and headed straight for what would become the most unforgettable dinner ever.

Night Market Dinner: Biryani, Chicken Bites… and Bugs?!

From The Cottage Suvarnabhumi, it was only 10-minute walk for us to explore the Robinsons Lifestyle Suvarnabhumi Night Market, which honestly had so much good food. Nacha got her faves: chicken bites, biryani, and juice.

Meanwhile, Noah? We signed up for the Bangkok Bug Challenge 🐛

Okay, not officially… but we really bought and ate a mix of insects that included:

  • Grasshoppers
  • Silkworms
  • Some other worms I don’t even want to name again (haha)

What Did They Taste Like?

So here’s the real question: how did they taste?

Noah, brave soul that he is, went first.

“It’s delicious!”
“Tastes like green peas.”
“Kind of like (chichirya).”
“It would be perfect with vinegar.”

(Me? I was already lowkey regretting my life choices 😅)

I took one tiny bite and immediately went into internal panic mode. Something about the texture was just… alarming. Like there were little pieces that stuck to my throat?!

Nacha’s Turn: The Yogurt Mochi

While her parents were busy chewing bugs, Nacha stepped up with her challenge: Cream Cheese Mochi with fruit inside. And oh wow, this girl owned it. 😂

“So stretchy!”
“110 out of 10!”

Honestly, her mochi review was the best part of dinner. Sweet, soft, with strawberries and grapes inside. After those crunchy insects, it felt like healing in dessert form.

Final Ratings from the Insect Judges

Noah gave his honest bug review, and to my surprise, he rated most of them around 7 to 8 out of 10! He even said:

“They’d taste better with vinegar.”
“High in protein.”
“It’s like (tuyo) or other dried fish.”

Me? I’m good with 1 out of 10 for courage and 10 out of 10 for trying.

(Mga siz, hindi ko kinaya. Sorry not sorry! 😂)

What’s Next: From Bugs to Business

After our wild food night, we boarded a flight to Shenzhen, China, for the Canton Fair 2025 – Tech Phase the next day. It’s one of the biggest trade fairs for suppliers and tech brands.

We’ll be sharing more updates on that soon!

In Conclusion: Would We Eat Insects Again?

Well… maybe. With vinegar, a brave heart, and lots of water. It’s one of those travel stories you’ll never forget, even if your taste buds try to 😂

Thanks for joining us on this crazy night! This is just one part of our travel series as we explore new places, flavors, and challenges as a family.

Love lots 💜,
