A Special Soul Who Taught Us Unconditional Love
My beloved uncle, Jessie Boy, 56 years old, a kind-hearted soul with Down syndrome, has always been the light of our family. His laughter, innocence, and pure heart have filled our lives with warmth and joy. But since December 2024, he has been facing the toughest battle of his life—Stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
As his condition worsened, we had to make a difficult yet compassionate decision—instead of putting him through dialysis, we chose palliative care to ensure his comfort and dignity in his remaining days.
Why We Chose Palliative Care Over Dialysis
When my uncle was diagnosed with Stage 5 CKD, doctors explained that dialysis could be an option. However, due to his pre-existing conditions—Down syndrome, difficulty in communication, blindness, and physical weakness—dialysis would have caused more suffering than relief. The process would have been extremely invasive, requiring frequent hospital visits, blood extractions, and uncomfortable procedures. Given his fragile state, he would not have been able to withstand the pain and discomfort of dialysis.
Instead, our priority became his comfort, love, and peace. Palliative care ensures that his last moments are free from unnecessary pain, surrounded by family, and filled with warmth rather than medical distress. This choice, while heartbreaking, was made out of love—to let him live his remaining days with dignity and without prolonged suffering.
Where Your Help Will Go
The estimated total cost of his palliative care over the next two months:
✅ Palliative nursing care & check-ups – ₱20,000 ($360)
✅ Nutritional support (soft meals, supplements) – ₱60,000 ($1,080)
✅ Comfort & hygiene needs (diapers, bedding, etc.) – ₱10,000 ($180)
✅ Medical needs (oxygen, pain relief, maintenance meds) – ₱30,000 ($540)
